  4. This document details the virus definitions update procedures for:
  5. * Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95
  6. * Norton AntiVirus 3.0
  7. * Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  8. * Norton AntiVirus for NetWare 2.0
  9. * Norton AntiVirus Scanner for Windows NT
  10. * Installing Virus Definitions Files Manually

  12. TIP: Be sure to read the WHATSNEW.TXT for important information about
  13. new viruses. The new macro virus that infects Microsoft Excel files 
  14. requires you to add .xl? to the Program File Extensions List. For 
  15. instructions, see WHATSNEW.TXT.

  18. Intelligent Updater
  19. ===================
  20. As part of our continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer
  21. viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called Intelligent
  22. Updater to simplify virus definitions files updates. Intelligent
  23. Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and installs new
  24. virus definitions files automatically. All you have to do is run the
  25. program then scan your disk with Norton AntiVirus. Later sections of
  26. this document give step-by-step instructions for each 
  27. Norton AntiVirus version.
  28.  
  29. The Intelligent Updater program file is located on your Virus 
  30. Definitions Update disk. The program name, which changes from month
  31. to month, uses the following form: 
  32.  
  33.      mmNAVyy.EXE, where mm is the month and yy is the year.
  34.  
  35. For example, 10NAV96.EXE is the virus definitions files update
  36. for October, 1996. 
  37.  
  38. Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95
  39. ===============================
  40. ____________________________________________________________________
  41. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95
  42. (NAVW32.EXE) is dated earlier than December 1, 1995, you need to 
  43. upgrade your software before updating the virus definitions files. 
  44. Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 will cause 
  45. false detections when the new virus definitions are installed. The
  46. Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 upgrade program updates 
  47. Norton AntiVirus to detect and eliminate a new class of viruses
  48. called macro viruses. These viruses infect Microsoft Word document
  49. and template files, and Microsoft Excel files.

  51. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus program, download the file named 
  52. NAV95PCH.EXE. Place the file in an empty folder and execute 
  53. NAV95PCH.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step instructions
  54. are included in the READNOW.TXT file.

  56. NAV95PCH.EXE is located where the monthly virus definitions files
  57. updates are normally found. It is available for download from the
  58. Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America 
  59. Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call Customer Service 
  60. at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.

  62. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definitions files:
  63. 1. Change to the folder where you downloaded the Intelligent
  64.    Updater program (10NAV96.EXE).
  65. 2. Double-click on the file 10NAV96.EXE.
  66.    Follow the instructions on screen.
  67. 3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. 
  68.    This activates the new virus definitions.
  69. 4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  70.    definitions as well.

  72. Norton AntiVirus 3.0

  75. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus 3.0 
  76. (NAV.EXE or NAVW.EXE) is dated earlier than February 23, 1996, you 
  77. need to upgrade your software before updating the virus definitions 
  78. files. Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus will cause false 
  79. detections when the new virus definitions are installed. The 
  80. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 upgrade program updates Norton AntiVirus to 
  81. detect and eliminate a new class of viruses called macro viruses. 
  82. These viruses infect Microsoft Word document and template 
  83. files, and  Microsoft Excel files.

  85. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus program, download the file named 
  86. UPDATEME.EXE. Place the file in an empty directory and execute
  87. UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step instructions
  88. are included in the READ.ME file (you can open this file using
  89. any text editor).

  92. updates are normally found. It is available for download from the
  93. Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America 
  94. Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call Customer Service
  95. at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.

  98. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files, use one of
  99. the following procedures. Either procedure will update both the 
  100. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 DOS and Windows components.

  102. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from Windows:
  103. 1. Change to the directory where you downloaded the 
  104.    Intelligent Updater program (10NAV96.EXE).
  105. 2. Double-click on the file 10NAV96.EXE.
  106.    Follow the instructions on screen.
  107. 3. After the update is complete, start Norton AntiVirus and
  108.    scan your drive.
  109.    This activates the new virus definitions.
  110. 4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  111.    definitions as well.

  113. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from DOS:
  114. 1. Change to the directory where you downloaded the 
  115.    Intelligent Updater program (10NAV96.EXE).
  116. 2. From the DOS prompt, type 10NAV96.EXE and press Enter. 
  117.    Follow the instructions on screen.
  118. 3. After the update is complete, start Norton AntiVirus and
  119.    scan your drive.
  120.    This activates the new virus definitions.
  121. 4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  122.    definitions as well.

  124. Norton AntiVirus for NetWare version 2.0
  125. =========================================

  127. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare, 
  128. version 2.0 is dated earlier than December 13, 1995, you must 
  129. upgrade your software before updating the virus definitions files. 
  130. The new version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare detects and 
  131. eliminates a new class of viruses called macro viruses. These 
  132. viruses infect Microsoft Word document and template files, and 
  133. Microsoft Excel files.

  136. Customer Service at (800) 441-7234.

  139. To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definitions files:
  140. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the 
  141.    directory where you downloaded the 
  142.    Intelligent Updater program (10NAV96.EXE).
  143. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where 
  144.    Norton AntiVirus for NetWare is installed. 
  145.    You must have WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  146. 3. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.
  147.    Choose DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus 
  148.    for NetWare Windows configuration window or press F3 at the 
  149.    NAVNLM server console screen. 
  150. 4. From a DOS prompt, type 10NAV96.EXE [path] and press Enter.
  151.    [path] is the location mapped in step 2. Follow the instructions
  152.    on screen.
  153. 5. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. 
  154.    Choose ENABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus 
  155.    for NetWare Windows 
  156.    configuration window or press F2 at the NAVNLM server console
  157.    screen. 
  158.  
  159. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  160. ================================

  162. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  163. (NAVNET.EXE) is dated before February, 1996, you must upgrade your
  164. software before updating the virus definitions files. Using an older
  165. version of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager with the new virus
  166. definitions may generate false alarms. 
  167.  
  168. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program, download
  169. the file named UPDATEME.EXE. Place the file in an empty directory
  170. and execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step
  171. instructions are included in the READ.ME file.

  173. After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, you must do the
  174. following:
  175.  
  176. 1. Delete all VIRSP*.DAT files from the Norton AntiVirus 
  177.    Network Manager directory.
  178. 2. Recreate your .NNS files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a
  179.    template.

  190. To update Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions files:

  199.    on screen.
  200. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  201.    directory and scan a drive to activate the new virus definitions.

  203. Norton AntiVirus Scanner for Windows NT
  204. =======================================
  205. To update Norton AntiVirus Scanner for NT virus definitions files:
  206. 1. Change to the folder where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater
  207.    program (10NAV96.EXE).
  208. 2. At a command prompt, type 10NAV96.EXE and press Enter.
  209.    Follow the instructions on screen.
  210. 3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.
  211.    This activates the new virus definitions.

  214. Installing Virus Definitions Files Manually
  215. ===========================================

  217. If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus 
  218. definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to
  219. extract the virus definitions files, then copy the appropriate files
  220. to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  221.  
  222. To install virus definitions files manually:
  223. 1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (10NAV96.EXE) to an empty 
  224.    temporary folder.
  225. 2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command:
  226.    10NAV96.EXE /DUMP
  227.    Virus definitions files for all supported platforms are extracted
  228.    into the temporary folder.
  229. 3. Copy the appropriate files to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  230.    Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information
  231.    on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
